Hundreds of thousands sign a petition against brexit

An online petition addressed to the British government asking to stay with the European Union has already collected 700,000 signatories in less than two days.

In theory, the government can let the EU know that on closer inspection the country will remain a member. This does not require the consent of third parties. But in the thousand and one day referendum on EU membership, a majority voted for the Brexit in 2016. Most British MPs, including proponents of membership, do not care about the outcome of the referendum.
