les saintes-maries-de-la-mer - Thousands of Roma and Sinti from across Europe gather in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer to celebrate patron saint Sint Sara, missing Dutch traveler Jan Dam, known as the last true gypsy.

Roma and Sinti Celebrate in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

Every year in late May, thousands of Roma and Sinti from Europe gather in the picturesque French village of Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer to honor their patron saint, Sint Sara.

Jan Dam's Absence

Jan Dam, an 81-year-old Dutch traveler, was a prominent guest at the festival. Known as the last true gypsy, he traveled with a horse and wagon to the Mediterranean pilgrimage site until a stroke confined him to a hospital in Nîmes.

Changing Traditions

Carine Jacqueson, a Roma descendant and friend of Jan, continues the tradition with their horse Abel, expressing nostalgia for the old ways amid modern changes in Roma lifestyles.

Roma Tradition and Celebration

Despite challenges in maintaining a nomadic lifestyle, around 10,000 Roma and Sinti gather in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer for the 90th pilgrimage, upholding customs and celebrating with processions and festivities.

Legacy of Sint Sara

The festival honors Sint Sara, a figure tied to the arrival of Mary Magdalene in France. The celebration includes rituals, music, and dances, although modern restrictions have altered some traditional practices.
