budapest - Hungarian government bans Budapest Pride, citing it as a waste of time and money, sparking backlash and criticism.

Hungarian Government Bans Budapest Pride

The Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has decided to prohibit the 30th edition of Budapest Pride in a public form this year.

Orbán, during a press conference, urged the organizers to refrain from preparing the event, labeling it as a waste of resources. The ruling party Fidesz later confirmed that the LGBTQ+ parade would not be allowed in its usual 'public form'.

The decision marks a stricter stance by the Hungarian government on LGBTQ+ rights, following previous bans on adoption for same-sex couples and strict regulations on sexual education and LGBTQ+ content in schools.

Despite the government's actions, organizers of Budapest Pride remain defiant, vowing to proceed with the event as a demonstration of democracy.

The move has drawn criticism from within Budapest's government as well, with Mayor Gergely Karácsony expressing support for Pride as a celebration of diversity and freedom.

The EU has also condemned Hungary's anti-LGBTQ+ measures, with the European Commission referring Hungary to the EU Court of Justice over the 'Child Protection Act', citing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

NGO ILGA-Europe warns that LGBTQ+ individuals are increasingly being targeted by radical-right governments in Europe, posing a threat to democracy's foundations.

The crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights in Hungary reflects a broader trend among radical-right leaders, emboldened by similar sentiments in the US under the Trump administration.
