oxford - The 'stroopwafel' has been included in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), confirming its popularity beyond Dutch borders.

The OED is an old and famous dictionary published by the University of Oxford. With the latest update, over five hundred new words have been added, including terms from the world of games and video games. Among them are terms used in Dutch, such as 'NPC' and 'cheat code'.

Several new culinary terms have also been added. 'SCOBY', an important component of the popular fermented tea kombucha, is now included.

According to the dictionary, the stroopwafel is best enjoyed warm with a cup of tea or coffee. The cookie is popular well beyond the Dutch borders, even among the OED staff, it's admitted.

Interestingly, Dutch lexicographers seem to have a stricter definition of a stroopwafel compared to the British. Van Dale describes it as 'a waffle consisting of two thin cookies with syrup in between', excluding caramel. In Dutch, the term 'karamelstroopwafel' is considered a distinct word.

Unlike Dutch, English does not have an official spelling.
