Belgium Requests Investigation of Five EU Parliament Members Over Huawei Corruption Allegations

Belgian authorities have requested the European Parliament to waive the immunity of five MEPs for an investigation into corrupt practices involving the Chinese tech giant Huawei. The MEPs include Daniel Attard (Malta), Nikola Minchev (Bulgaria), Salvatore De Meo, Fulvio Martusciello, and Giusi Princi (Italy).

Cooperation with Authorities

Minchev, Attard, and De Meo have expressed willingness to cooperate with authorities to prove their innocence.

Police Investigation and Arrests

In March, Belgian police launched a probe into bribery by Huawei lobbyists, resulting in arrests in France, Portugal, and Belgium, along with office searches in the parliament.

Lobbyists Excluded from EU Buildings

Following the accusations, Huawei lobbyists have been barred from EU premises, although it remains unclear if any MEPs were bribed.
