damascus - A Syrian activist, who had previously sought asylum in the Netherlands, was found dead in the notorious Sednaya prison in Damascus. His unexpected return to Syria did not end well.

A Syrian activist, Mazen Hamada, was reportedly found dead in the feared Sednaya prison in Damascus, Syria, shortly before 'the liberation' as per reports from the country. It is believed that he had suffered severe injuries, as depicted in the published images of him.

Hamada was arrested after the initial protests against Assad and later fled to the Netherlands in 2014, where he disclosed the brutal treatment he endured under the regime. Despite his harrowing experiences, he returned to Syria in 2020 under unclear circumstances. His fate had been a cause for concern since then.

Recent events where jihadist rebels have liberated prisons under the Assad regime have heightened fears for Hamada's safety. The activist was found over the weekend by journalists and activists in the country, with an official autopsy pending.

The Assad regime has a history of imprisoning and prosecuting political dissidents under harsh conditions. The future treatment of Assad's supporters and the Alawite community remains uncertain under the new rulers.

Jihadist leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani has instructed his followers to refrain from violence temporarily, pledging protection to Christians and other minority groups. However, former military and security officials responsible for the Syrian people's torture are being sought for accountability.

Al-Jolani stated on Telegram that the new government will seek extradition of wanted individuals who have fled abroad.
