barcelona - Spanish High Court rejects amnesty for Carles Puigdemont due to misuse of public funds. Updates on Catalonian separatist leader's legal case.

Spanish High Court Rejects Amnesty for Puigdemont

The Spanish High Court confirmed that Carles Puigdemont is not eligible for amnesty due to misuse of public funds in addition to disobedience to Spanish law.

Puigdemont's Current Status

Carles Puigdemont remains in Belgium since fleeing Spain after the 2017 self-determination referendum and declaration of Catalonian independence. Spanish judge Pablo Llarena continues to pursue him for disobedience and financial misconduct.

Amnesty Law Implementation

An amnesty law was enacted two years ago to pardon those involved in the failed Catalonian independence attempt. However, the law is selectively applied, with Puigdemont not benefiting from it.

Legal Ruling and Consequences

The Spanish High Court ruled in alignment with the government and parliament's intentions during the amnesty law's drafting, citing exceptions for personal financial gain. Puigdemont and minister Toni Comín's arrest warrants remain active.
