ankara - Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the Kurdish PKK, urges PKK to lay down arms after a call from MHP leader Devlet Bahceli and President Erdogan.

Historical Call for Ceasefire

Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdish PKK, has issued a statement calling for the PKK to lay down their weapons. This call comes after a surprising proposal last year by MHP leader Devlet Bahceli, suggesting that Öcalan could be released if he called for disarmament and dissolution of the PKK. The PKK, established in 1978 and known for its armed conflict with the Turkish state since 1984, has caused over 40,000 casualties in the prolonged conflict. Despite being designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the EU, and the US, Öcalan has previously called for ceasefires, with a notable truce between 2012 and 2015 which later reignited clashes.

The PKK's military base is located in the Kandil Mountains in northeastern Iraq, while its Syrian affiliate, the YPG, controls a significant area in Syria, much to Turkey's dismay. The potential consequences for the YPG if the PKK disarms remain uncertain.

Öcalan, a symbolic figure in the Kurdish nationalist movement, has a complex history of activism and conflict with the Turkish state. Despite being sentenced to life imprisonment in Turkey since 1999, questions arise regarding potential outcomes of his recent ceasefire call. Will Öcalan be released? Will there be concessions to Kurds in the form of increased autonomy or the release of prominent Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas?

The Kurdish Democratic Regions Party (DEM) holds significant influence in southeastern Turkey but faces repeated bans and legal challenges due to alleged ties with the PKK. The treatment of Kurdish politicians, including mayors, underscores the ongoing political tension within Turkey's Kurdish-majority regions.

Öcalan's history, from his early leadership of the PKK to his capture in Kenya in 1999, reflects the enduring struggle for Kurdish rights and autonomy. His imprisonment continues to symbolize the unresolved Kurdish question in Turkey and the broader region.
