malaga, southern spain - Southern Spain, particularly Malaga province, faces heavy rainfall causing floods and school closures.

Code Orange Weather Alert in Southern Spain

Heavy rainfall is once again affecting Southern Spain, this time hitting the province of Malaga. Streets in Torremolinos are flooded, prompting authorities to issue a code orange weather alert. Residents are advised to stay indoors, and schools have been closed.

Severe Weather Conditions

The towns of Mijas, Torremolinos, and Fuengirola are experiencing severe weather conditions. The storm is expected to move towards Axarquía by Monday afternoon, with continuous heavy rain throughout the day. Weather forecasts predict up to 100 liters of rain per square meter within twelve hours. Torremolinos received over 80 liters of rain per square meter in just one hour, leading to the elevation of the weather alert from yellow to orange.

Flooding has occurred in various areas due to the excessive rainfall, resulting in the washing away of several cars. Malaga and Fuengirola also witnessed heavy rainfall, with 32 and 33 liters of water per square meter, respectively.

In Mijas, more than 62 liters of rain fell within twelve hours, along with Colmenar and Cartama receiving 21 and 16 liters per square meter by 8:00 AM. The rain showers are now moving towards the inland areas of the province.

The Torremolinos City Council issued a warning on social media advising students not to attend classes on Monday, February 3, due to the severe weather conditions. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise extreme caution, especially in heavily affected areas like El Pinillo.
