Venezuela to Arrest Opposition Leader Edmundo González Upon Return

caracas - Venezuelan Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, emphasizes that opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia will be arrested upon setting foot on Venezuelan soil to prevent President Nicolás Maduro's inauguration.

Opposition claims González Urrutia overwhelmingly won July elections and should be sworn in as president on Friday. The US and many South American countries support the accusation of government fraud to secure Maduro's victory.

Maduro maintains his win and discredits González Urrutia's claims. An arrest warrant was issued for the opposition leader in early September, prompting his flight to Spain. It was revealed he had spent considerable time at the Dutch embassy in Venezuela.

The election outcome sparked large-scale protests in Venezuela resulting in numerous arrests and at least 28 fatalities. González Urrutia urges supporters to protest Maduro's inauguration on Thursday. He also sought military support which was declined by military leadership.
