EU Official Kallas on Eastern Mediterranean Claims

brussels - EU Commission Vice President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas made statements on the possible agreement between Turkey and Syria regarding maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Kaja Kallas, during an interview with Greek newspaper 'Ta Nea', mentioned her discussion with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan regarding the alleged agreement between Turkey and Syria on maritime jurisdictions.

She stated that Minister Fidan assured her that Turkey has no intentions of such an agreement and dismissed the rumors as baseless.

When asked about what the EU would do to prevent such an agreement, Kallas responded that she had received assurances that it would not happen.

On concerns about Turkey's role in Syria, Kallas emphasized the importance of a stable Syria for the interests of Turkey, neighboring countries, and the EU.

The possibility of an agreement on maritime boundaries between Turkey and Syria has been a top agenda item in Athens and the Cyprus Republic. Greek diplomatic sources argued that any agreement during the current situation in Syria would lack legal validity.
