SPD Votes Out Chancellor Scholz: 'Worst Result in 135 Years'

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the SPD faced a dramatic election day with only 16% of the votes, marking their worst result in 135 years. The exit poll revealed a significant drop from the previous election in 2021 when the SPD secured over 25% of the votes.

German newspaper Bild delved into history and highlighted that under Scholz's leadership, the SPD achieved its lowest result ever. 'A historic low: 16%! It is the worst SPD result in 135 years!' Bild stated, tracing back to 1890.

CDU leader Friedrich Merz is seen as the frontrunner to succeed Scholz as chancellor, with CDU/CSU projected to receive 29% of the votes. The AfD nearly doubled its support from around 10% to nearly 20%. AfD leader Alice Weidel called it a historic outcome, despite other parties ruling out any coalition with AfD.
