washington - President Donald Trump declares an immediate ceasefire between India and Pakistan, facilitated by US mediation. Both countries agree to talks following high-level discussions with US officials.

Trump Announces Ceasefire Between India and Pakistan

President Donald Trump has announced an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between India and Pakistan, praising both countries for their rational approach to the conflict. The ceasefire follows intensive discussions involving US officials and high-ranking Indian and Pakistani leaders.

US Mediation Efforts

Over the past 48 hours, US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance engaged in talks with key Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.

Rubio expressed his delight at the agreement, stating that both India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and will initiate discussions on a range of issues at a neutral location. He commended the wisdom and statesmanship of Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif in choosing the path of peace.

Unexpected Ceasefire Announcement

The announcement of an immediate ceasefire comes as a surprise, given Vice President JD Vance's recent statement to Fox News that the US would limit its involvement to diplomatic efforts in the India-Pakistan conflict. While encouraging de-escalation, Vance emphasized that the US would not intervene in a conflict that is not directly its concern.

Despite this, Pakistan conducted a military strike on India overnight, citing retaliation for earlier Indian airstrikes on Pakistani military bases. The clashes resulted in casualties on both sides, with Pakistan reporting eleven deaths and over fifty injuries, and India confirming five fatalities.

Roots of Tension

The current tensions between Pakistan and India stem from a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22. India alleges that the attackers have links to Pakistan, a claim disputed by Islamabad.
