mexico city - Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum responds to Donald Trump's plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, citing historical and international significance.

President Donald Trump's suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America has sparked outrage in Mexico. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum rebuked the proposal, highlighting the historical and international importance of the current name. She emphasized that the Gulf of Mexico is a name deeply rooted in history and is recognized by international organizations. She even referenced an old map from 1607 that showed the area as 'América Mexicana', including territories now part of the United States.

During a press conference, Sheinbaum's political advisor presented a historical lesson using an ancient map to showcase the boundaries of Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico. She made it clear that changing the name to the Gulf of America would go against historical records and international conventions. Moreover, Sheinbaum expressed her hope for a positive relationship with President Trump, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and collaboration.

Trump's comments also included remarks about Mexico's control by drug cartels and threats to increase import tariffs if certain conditions are not met. This has further strained the diplomatic relations between the two countries.
