cape canaveral - The Europa Clipper mission aims to search for signs of life on Jupiter's moon Europa, which is believed to have a vast ocean beneath its icy surface.

If there is life to be found outside of Earth, the chances are highest on Europa, one of Jupiter's many moons. Europa is slightly smaller than our moon, with a surface covered by a crust of ice about 20 kilometers thick. Beneath this icy shell lies a suspected ocean of liquid saltwater estimated to be around a hundred kilometers deep. If confirmed, Europa would hold twice as much water as all Earth's oceans combined.

Scientists are uncertain about the composition of the water beneath Europa's icy surface and whether there might be any signs of life. Hence, the Europa Clipper mission is set to investigate further. Europa may contain organic substances crucial for sustaining life. The possibility of life on Europa raises the question of other similar worlds within and beyond our solar system.

The Europa Clipper is expected to reach Jupiter in April 2030 after traveling approximately 2.9 billion kilometers. It will conduct 49 close flybys of Europa, reaching as close as 25 kilometers above its surface. The spacecraft carries nine instruments, including a radar capable of peering through the icy crust.

Jupiter and Europa are five times farther from the sun than Earth, receiving minimal sunlight. To ensure power supply, the Europa Clipper boasts two massive solar panels, each over 14 meters long and 4 meters high, manufactured by Airbus Netherlands in Leiden. These panels are designed to capture as much sunlight as possible to sustain the spacecraft.

Originally scheduled for launch last Thursday, the Europa Clipper's mission was postponed due to Hurricane Milton. The new launch date is set for Monday at 18:09 Dutch time from Cape Canaveral.
