Colombian President Suspends Peace Talks

President Gustavo Petro of Colombia has suspended peace talks with ELN guerrilla movement after a violent confrontation in Norte de Santander province. The region saw multiple civilian casualties in an armed clash between ELN and FARC dissidents, both left-wing groups vying for control over the lucrative cocaine trade. The violence erupted in Catatumbo, known for its extensive coca plantations and oil reserves.

The recent bloodshed, including a massacre in TibĂș where a local funeral director and his family were brutally murdered, resulted in 60-80 fatalities according to authorities. The victims also included seven signatories of the FARC-government peace accord, targeted and executed by ELN forces. President Petro denounced the ELN for war crimes and deployed 300 military personnel to the region.

As the conflict escalates, over 5000 residents, including vulnerable groups like elderly, children, and pregnant women, have fled their homes to seek safety. Hospitals in Catatumbo are on high alert, schools remain closed, and hundreds of refugees are crossing into Venezuela's Zulia province for shelter. Aid trucks carrying ten tons of supplies have departed to alleviate food shortages in the region.

The situation is dire, prompting a plea from the Women's Association for Peace in Catatumbo for government intervention to protect beleaguered communities and restore peace amidst the chaos.
