New European Sanctions Imposed on Iran, Targeting Maritime Sector

brussels - The EU has decided to implement a new package of sanctions against Iran, mainly due to its military support for Russia in the war with Ukraine.

The EU has decided on Monday to impose a ban on the export, transfer, or sale of parts to Iran that could be used in the development and production of missiles and drones.

Most of the new punitive measures are focused on the maritime sector because of the transportation of weapons to Russia. The EU is introducing a transaction ban on ports and locks used for these transports, including the ports of Amirabad and Anzali.

In addition, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines will be added to the sanction list. According to Brussels, their ships have been involved in shipping drones from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy for years. Three Russian shipping companies alleged to be involved in the transportation of Iranian weapons will also be placed on the blacklist.

The EU had previously sanctioned Iran's national airline.
