Senate VS agrees with Kavanaugh as chief judge

World October 6, 2018 23:16

- The US Senate agreed with 50 votes in favor and 48 against the accession of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court. The candidate chief judge, put forward by President Donald Trump, was discredited by accusations of sexually transgressive behavior in his high school time.

An FBI investigation into the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford, which accused Kavanaugh of assault, drew two of the three doubting Republican senators over the line to approve his appointment. A Democrat also agreed. Fifty members voted for, 48 were against.

Conservative Kavanaugh succeeds the moderate Anthony Kennedy, who retired at the end of July. The Court now has nine members, five of whom are Republicans.

Kavanaugh was the hoped candidate of President Trump. He had promised in his campaign to appoint conservative judges. With him as head of the Surpreme Court, Trump would be supported over the coming decades from that important legislative body, for Kavanaugh is appointed for life.
