washington - President Trump's decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine sparks backlash from critics.

Temporary Suspension of Military Aid

President Trump's abrupt decision to freeze approximately $1 billion in weapons and ammunition destined for Ukraine has stirred controversy. While some reports suggest the sanction only applies to future deliveries, others claim existing supplies, including those in Poland awaiting transportation, will be affected. The move comes after a White House meeting on Monday with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Trump's action followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's comments, post-UK summit, stating that peace with Russia remains distant. The US aims to pressure Zelensky to align more closely with American peace efforts, as it seeks to disentangle itself financially and militarily from the ongoing conflict, which some in the Trump administration believe distracts from the threat posed by Beijing.

The pause in arms deliveries is viewed in American media as an ultimatum to Ukraine, potentially playing into Russia's hands depending on the duration of the freeze. Western officials suggest Ukraine could sustain its current level of fighting for weeks, possibly until summer, before feeling the impact of the suspension. However, crucial intelligence and training from the US are expected to continue for now.

The US government indicates that the freeze will be lifted if Zelensky shows more willingness to engage in peace talks. Congressional Democrats have vehemently criticized the White House's move, while some Republicans have also expressed concern about jeopardizing European stability and the principles of democracy.

Washington's decision to halt military support to Ukraine comes on the heels of a recent directive to temporarily cease cyberattacks against Russia. US Cyber Command's offensive operations have been paused, although defensive measures remain unaffected. The Pentagon's actions align with broader efforts to facilitate a peace agreement.

President Trump is set to address Congress on Tuesday evening, shedding light on his future Ukraine policy and broader foreign policy objectives.
