jerusalem - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu states that the release of hostage Edan Alexander by Hamas will not result in a truce or release of Palestinian prisoners.

Netanyahu's Stance on Hostage Release and Ceasefire

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that the release of the Israëlisch-Amerikaanse hostage Edan Alexander by Hamas will not lead to a ceasefire or the release of Palestinian prisoners. Instead, Israel will ensure safe conditions surrounding the release.

Negotiations Amid Ongoing Conflict

Netanyahu's statement comes as negotiations with Hamas continue amidst the conflict in the Gaza Strip, with preparations also being made for an escalation of hostilities.

Hope for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid

Hamas expressed hope that the release could pave the way for a ceasefire and the entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged region. Qatar and Egypt viewed the news as a positive step towards renewed ceasefire talks.

Details regarding Alexander's release remain undisclosed, with a Hamas official suggesting it could occur within 48 hours. Among the remaining hostages in Gaza, the Israeli military believes that 34 may have died.

Background on Gaza Conflict

Following the kidnapping of around 250 hostages during a deadly attack on Israel in October 2023, Israel has conducted devastating assaults on Gaza. A temporary ceasefire in mid-January was intended to lead to a permanent end to the conflict, but disagreements between Israel and Hamas have prevented its continuation for over two months.
