President Biden Commutes Sentences of About 2,500 Individuals

President Joe Biden has announced the commutation of sentences for approximately 2,500 individuals convicted of non-violent drug crimes. Biden, who has been under scrutiny for pardoning his son Hunter Biden for tax evasion and illegal weapon possession, revealed the decision to reduce the sentences of those convicted of non-violent drug offenses.

According to reports in the US media, Biden, who will hand over his duties to elected President Donald Trump on January 20, stated that he will use his remaining days in office to 'continue reviewing additional sentence reductions and pardons.' Biden, who faced backlash for pardoning his son Hunter Biden, who was found guilty of tax evasion and illegal weapon possession, announced that he has commuted the sentences of about 2,500 individuals convicted of non-violent drug crimes.

Biden hinted that he may take further steps regarding pardons in the upcoming days. On December 12, 2024, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Biden commuted the sentences of approximately 1,500 individuals who were released from prison and placed under house arrest, as well as granting pardons to 39 US citizens convicted of non-violent crimes. On December 23, 2024, Biden converted the sentence of 37 out of 40 federal inmates facing the death penalty to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

President Biden exercised his authority to grant a pardon for his son Hunter Biden on December 2, 2024. He stated that he is trying to uphold his promise but accused Republicans of 'politicizing' the process against him.
