Mysterious Twist in Theft: Homeless Thieves Offered Share of €500,000 Jackpot by Victim

Two homeless men who bought a winning scratch card in France with a stolen bank card were offered a life-changing opportunity by their victim: a share of the €500,000 jackpot. The situation raises legal questions about rightful ownership and lottery payout.

On February 3, two homeless men stole a backpack from a car in central Toulouse, France, containing bank cards and ID papers of a 42-year-old man named Jean-David. The victim reported the theft to the police and blocked his bank cards.

One of the thieves used a card to purchase goods worth €52.5 at a newsagent that day, prompting Jean-David to visit the store for CCTV footage. The storekeeper recalled the men, aged 30-40, buying cigarettes and scratch cards suspiciously.

After realizing their win, the homeless men tried to claim the €500,000 jackpot but were directed to the French national lottery. The situation remains unresolved as the lottery froze the winning ticket pending investigation.

Lawyer Pierre Debuisson stated the lottery should unblock the winning ticket if presented, emphasizing the shared responsibility of the thieves and the victim in the win.
