brasilia - Former President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil is facing accusations regarding his involvement in a failed coup attempt in 2022, with his lawyers now shifting the blame to high-ranking military officials in his government.

Former President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil is being accused of being aware of and playing a significant role in a coup plot aimed at preventing left-wing politician Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from assuming the presidency in 2023. Bolsonaro's lawyers are now claiming that senior military officials wanted to use the coup to remove him from power and establish a military junta. They are placing the blame on Bolsonaro's former Defense Minister Walter Braga Netto and National Security Adviser Augusto Heleno, alleging that the two retired generals stood to benefit the most from overthrowing the government.

An analysis of the coup plans recovered from retired General Mario Fernandes, a close advisor to Bolsonaro and one of the main suspects, revealed that the plotters discussed assassinating Lula da Silva, his vice-presidential candidate Gerardo Alckim, and a prominent judge. Bolsonaro's lawyer emphasized that Bolsonaro was not present at the meeting and therefore had no obligation to report it, arguing against his incarceration.

The unfolding scandal has caused a rift within the Brazilian political landscape, with Bolsonaro's supporters and critics trading accusations of opportunism and personal interests. The legal battle surrounding the failed coup is intensifying, with calls for a fair and impartial trial for all parties involved.
