European Parliament Corruption Scandal

The European Parliament is embroiled in a new corruption scandal as Huawei lobbyists are accused of paying bribes to MEPs, according to Follow the Money (FTM).

Bribery Allegations

  • Lobbyists reportedly treated MEPs with football tickets, trips to China, gifts, and cash in exchange for positive mentions of Huawei.
  • Security concerns have been raised in Brussels about Huawei's involvement in 5G rollout in Europe.

Investigations Underway

  • Belgian authorities have launched a large-scale corruption probe into Huawei lobbyists, with raids conducted at their residences.
  • Approximately 15 current and former MEPs are under scrutiny, with a Portuguese company acting as an intermediary.

Previous Scandal: Qatargate

A similar scandal, known as Qatargate, involved allegations of Qatar and Morocco attempting to buy influence in the European Parliament by offering bribes to left-wing MEPs.
