amsterdam - President Trump warns of boycotting NATO summit in The Hague if countries ignore his call to increase defense spending, amidst tensions with German Chancellor Merkel.

Donald Trump Threatens to Boycott NATO Summit in The Hague

President Trump has reiterated his stance on the need for NATO members to increase their defense spending, a point he has been vocal about since his first term in office. He has criticized leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, for not meeting the NATO spending target and relying heavily on the U.S.

Tensions with Merkel

Reports claim that in 2018, Trump presented Merkel with a 'NATO bill' of 345 billion euros, demanding Germany to pay up. While German officials denied this, it highlighted the strained relationship between Trump and Merkel.

Boycott Threat

Recent requests from the U.S. for increased military spending have put pressure on NATO allies. The American NATO ambassador in Brussels hinted that Trump may skip the NATO summit in The Hague if countries do not meet the spending demands, posing a significant setback for the alliance.

Call for Increased Spending

Trump has pushed for countries to allocate 5% of their GDP to defense, a target that initially seemed negotiable to some but is now believed to be a serious demand. NATO chief Mark Rutte has also urged allies to step up their financial contributions.

Response from Germany

Germany faces pressure to expand its military and increase spending significantly. The Bundeswehr is expected to grow to nearly a quarter of a million personnel, prompting calls for urgent action within the German military.
