US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Hosts QUAD Meeting

Newly appointed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hosted a QUAD meeting in Washington with the Foreign Ministers of Japan, India, and Australia. The joint statement reaffirmed the commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific vision, emphasizing support for the rule of law, democratic values, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The four countries reiterated their determination to strengthen the free and open Indo-Pacific vision, which forms the foundation of security, development, and prosperity for the people of the region across various areas such as international law, economic opportunities, peace, stability, and maritime security. The statement strongly opposed any unilateral action aimed at changing the status quo through coercion or force, and emphasized the promotion of robust and resilient supply chains in the face of increasing threats, as well as enhancing regional maritime, economic, and technological security. The statement highlighted the continued cooperation among QUAD countries, with regular contacts to be maintained until the next QUAD summit hosted by India. The QUAD, initiated in 2007 and formalized as a quadrilateral alliance in 2017, is known as an informal strategic partnership against China.
