Teen Gangs on the Rise in Sweden: Youth Recruited for Violent 'Jobs'

A recent shooting incident in Uppsala has brought attention to the growing issue of teenage gang violence in Sweden, where minors are being recruited for violent crimes.

Suspects and Victims

Two men aged around 24 and 35 are suspected of 'incitement to murder,' while a third man in his twenties is suspected of murder. The victims, aged between 15 and 20, were fatally shot in a hair salon on Tuesday.

Criminal Gangs in Uppsala

Reports suggest that one of the deceased had ties to a criminal gang. Uppsala is known to be home to two of Sweden's notorious gangs, Rumba and Foxtrot.

Trend of Teenage Involvement

Concern is growing in Sweden over the disturbing trend of minors being increasingly used in extremely violent crimes. The use of teenage hitmen is becoming more common, prompting the Swedish government to take firm actions.

Roots of the Issue

According to criminologist David Sausdal, the criminal networks' leaders often operate from abroad, coordinating attacks and murders in Sweden from countries like Turkey, Iraq, and Iran.

Government Response

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has acknowledged the severity of the situation and called for additional measures to combat the escalating violence. The government is considering allowing surveillance of minors under 15 by the police and customs, even without concrete suspicions of a crime.

Debate on Solutions

While the government aims to implement stricter measures, criminologist David Sausdal argues that the focus should be on broader societal issues such as education, crime prevention, and social services rather than solely on harsher punishments.
