ottawa - The Liberal Party emerges victorious in Canada's parliamentary elections, surprising many as they defeat the Conservative Party. Carney's stance on Canadian independence gains support amid competition with Pierre Poilievre.

Liberal Party Secures Victory in Canadian Parliamentary Elections

The Liberal Party has won the Canadian parliamentary elections, as reported by CBC News based on an exit poll. The battle for the premiership primarily involved Carney and Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party.

Surprising Turn of Events

Months ago, the idea of the Liberal Party winning seemed unlikely. Poilievre led in polls for a significant period, but the dynamics shifted with the entry of Donald Trump into the scene.

Carney's Strong Stance

In his campaign, Carney emphasized Canadian independence, positioning himself as the preferred candidate to counter Trump's influence. Trump even suggested on election day that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.

For a majority, the Liberal Party needs 172 seats in the Canadian parliament. Other participating parties include Bloc Québécois, New Democratic Party, and the Green Party. The Liberals, under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, had been in power for over nine years.

Trudeau announced his departure from politics in January, setting the stage for new leadership within the Liberal Party.
