- The US administration announced additional customs duties of 25% on goods imported from Canada and Mexico, and 10% on imports from China.

US Imposes New Tariffs on Imports

The US government has introduced new tariffs on goods imported from Canada, Mexico, and China. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing additional customs duties of 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico, and 10% on imports from China.

The White House stated that a 10% lower tariff would be applied to energy resources imported from Canada. The trade relationship between the countries was highlighted, with the US having the highest trade deficit exceeding $1 trillion. Tariffs are emphasized as a strong tool to protect national interests, focusing on security and safety.

The statement addressed the problems caused by illegal immigration, such as lowering wages, reducing housing supply, increasing rents, straining social assistance systems, and leading to crimes. It also highlighted the issue of fentanyl, a drug causing thousands of American deaths annually.

The executive order includes a provision for retaliatory measures if the countries choose to retaliate. The tariffs will come into effect after midnight on February 4th, local time. President Trump emphasized the importance of stopping the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs across the borders.
