poland - Polish authorities have arrested four suspects accused of sending hidden explosives in DHL shipments to Europe and the US on behalf of a foreign secret service.

Polish authorities have apprehended four suspects believed to have sent concealed explosives in DHL shipments to various EU countries and the UK. Investigations reveal that these packages were designed in a way that they could ignite or explode during transport over land or sea. The group also intended to test routes for such packages to the US and Canada. Whether these packages detonated has not been disclosed due to an ongoing investigation.

Following previous incidents at logistic DHL centers in Germany, security agencies had already warned of 'unusual' firebombs being sent by unknown perpetrators. In July, a package from the Baltic states containing a firebomb caught fire. German newspaper Bild noted the high shipping costs of the parcels, which were 'disproportionate to the value of the goods.'

European security officials suspect Russian accomplices to be behind these dangerous packages, as reported by The Washington Post. Investigators believe that these explosive packages were trial versions for future attacks on planes bound for North America.

According to European security officials, an international investigation found that the group of suspects also dispatched test packages without the flammable contents to American and Canadian addresses, likely to assess successful delivery.

In response to the evidence, Poland has closed the Russian embassy in Poznan.
