Second Hottest April on Record

April 2024 has been reported as the second warmest on record, with a global average surface temperature of 14.96 degrees Celsius, just 0.07 degrees cooler than the warmest April ever recorded. This information comes from the European climate service Copernicus, indicating a continuing trend of rising temperatures.

European Climate Report Highlights

Europe experienced an average surface temperature of 9.38 degrees Celsius in April, ranking it as the sixth warmest April on the continent. Regions like East Europe, Western Russia, Kazakhstan, and Norway experienced higher temperatures than usual, while Turkey, certain parts of Bulgaria and Romania, Crimea, and Northern Scandinavia saw colder temperatures than the norm. The report also noted drier conditions in Central Europe, the UK, Southern Scandinavia, and parts of Eastern Europe, whereas Southern Europe, Northern Norway, Southern Finland, Western Russia, and the Alps experienced above-average rainfall, leading to floods, landslides, and avalanches.

Furthermore, sea temperatures remained high in April. The sea surface temperature averaged 20.89 degrees Celsius, the second-highest level ever recorded, being 0.15 degrees lower than in April 2024. Particularly, the northeastern North Atlantic Ocean and parts of the Mediterranean Sea saw warmer temperatures than usual.
