manchester, u.k. - Sources reveal Manchester United's struggle to secure a new striker for the upcoming season, possibly entering without a recognized No. 9 despite recent squad enhancements.

Manchester United's Striker Search Dilemma

Sources close to the club have disclosed that Manchester United may kick off the new season without a new striker, despite efforts to strengthen the squad. Manager Ruben Amorim's pursuit for a recognized No. 9 has faced setbacks, with failed attempts to secure Liam Delap, Viktor Gyökeres, and Hugo Ekitike.

Recent Squad Additions

The team has recently welcomed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who collectively scored 35 Premier League goals last season in deals totaling £135 million ($183m). Despite the need for a new striker after a low goal tally last term, uncertainties loom over any potential new signing before the transfer deadline.

Current Striker Options

As United embarks on their U.S. preseason tour, strikers Rasmus Højlund, Joshua Zirkzee, and Chido Obi are part of the squad. Both Højlund and Zirkzee struggled last season, prompting considerations for reinforcements. Speculations hint at a possible swap deal with Chelsea involving Nicolas Jackson and Alejandro Garnacho.

Potential Tactical Adjustments

To address the striker dilemma, Amorim may opt to deploy Bryan Mbeumo as a central striker in the 3-4-3 system, deviating from his usual No. 10 role. This tactical shift could be witnessed in Mbeumo's debut against West Ham in New Jersey.
