Handwritten Mozart letter sold at auction for 440,000 euros

A handwritten letter by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was sold at an auction in Madrid for a staggering 440,000 euros, as reported by Spanish media. The auction, organized by International Autograph Auctions Europa, specialized in manuscripts and signatures.

The value of the letter was initially estimated at 200,000 euros, but bids poured in from around the world, eventually being won by a European buyer, according to the auction house.

The Austrian composer (1756-1791) penned the letter on April 26, 1783. Records from the Archive of Book Auctions and Sales (ABSA) show that in the past fifty years, only 25 documents signed by Mozart have been auctioned, with most being incomplete.

Of note is the fact that Mozart addressed the letter to a fellow composer, the French musician Jean-Georges Sieber, as opposed to his usual correspondents, such as his father or other family members.
