pyrenees, france - An 81-year-old French hunter who shot a bear in the Pyrenees in 2021 avoids jail time after a dramatic encounter resulting in severe injuries.

French Hunter Escapes Prison for Shooting Bear in the Pyrenees

An 81-year-old hunter from France, André Rives, faced a court decision three and a half years after shooting a bear named Caramelles in the Pyrenees. The incident occurred in 2021 during a hunting excursion for wild boars with a group of hunters near Seix.

Dramatic Encounter with a Bear

During the hunting trip, Rives and a fellow hunter unexpectedly encountered two young bears in the forest. The situation took a dangerous turn when the mother bear, Caramelles, attacked Rives, resulting in severe injuries to his legs.

Rives recounted the harrowing experience during a court hearing, describing how the bear mauled him, causing significant damage to his legs. Despite the life-threatening situation, Rives managed to defend himself by fatally shooting the bear.

Court Verdict and Consequences

The court sentenced Rives to four months of probation and a nominal fine, despite facing up to three years in prison and a substantial penalty. Additionally, the other hunters involved in the incident received fines, with two losing their hunting licenses temporarily.

Although Rives' life was endangered during the bear attack, the group had trespassed into a nature reserve where hunting was prohibited. The court found that Rives had shot Caramelles just 400 meters away from a legal hunting area.

Conservation Efforts and Bear Population

The Pyrenees, acting as a natural border between France and Spain, have seen the successful reintroduction of bears through conservation programs. Currently, an estimated 97 to 127 bears inhabit the region, marking a significant recovery from near extinction.

The unfortunate incident led to the death of Caramelles, whose taxidermy now resides in the Toulouse Natural History Museum. Despite the court ruling, several nature organizations seek further compensation for the loss of the bear.
