peking - Rescue operation underway to save a 74-year-old truck driver stuck in a sinkhole in Japan, as road continues to collapse.

Rescue Operation in Japan

A 74-year-old truck driver is trapped in a sinkhole in Yashio, near Tokyo, as the road collapses. Authorities fear the worst as the rescue effort intensifies.

The sinkhole, measuring five meters wide and ten meters deep, appeared suddenly at a junction, swallowing the truck moments after. The driver's cabin remains buried under debris as the clock ticks.

Efforts to save the driver have been hampered by further collapses and falling infrastructure, complicating the already challenging rescue mission. Despite initial signs of life, contact with the driver has been lost.

The sinkhole, now a 20-meter-wide crater, poses a threat to nearby residents and infrastructure. Evacuations have been carried out, with concerns over a gas pipeline at risk of rupture.

Authorities suspect the sinkholes were caused by a sewer pipe crack and leaking wastewater, prompting precautionary measures and ongoing assessments of the situation.

As Japan faces a growing infrastructure crisis, Tokyo has initiated inspections in seven prefectures with similar issues, anticipating more road collapses due to aging pipelines.

Recent history of sinkholes in Japan includes a 40-meter-wide crater in Hiroshima in 2020 and a 30-square-meter sinkhole in Fukuoka in 2016, highlighting the recurring challenges posed by aging urban infrastructure.
