strasbourg - Venezuelan opposition leader and human rights activist María Corina Machado has been honored with the Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize for her outstanding efforts in defending human rights.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize for her exceptional actions in defending human rights. The award, presented by the Council of Europe, recognized Machado's resistance against the 'stolen' presidential elections in Venezuela. Despite being excluded from the elections in July, Machado continues her fight for democracy and human rights in the country.

Living in hiding since August, Machado expressed her gratitude for being the first Latin American to receive the award. She dedicated the recognition to the millions of Venezuelans who uphold the values and ideas of Havel on a daily basis, emphasizing the importance of continuing the struggle until truth prevails.

The Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize, named after the former Czechoslovak president and playwright, is awarded annually to individuals or organizations for their exceptional contributions to human rights. During the award ceremony, Theodoros Rousopoulos, Chair of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, called for the immediate release of past winners who are currently imprisoned for their peaceful advocacy for a just and free society.
