Hamas Militants Exploiting Hospitals in Gaza: Israel Under Pressure to Release Director

tel aviv - Israel is facing pressure to release Hossam Abu Safiya, the director of a hospital in Gaza, shedding light on how hospitals are repeatedly becoming a battleground in the region.

Israel is under heavy pressure to release Hossam Abu Safiya, director of a hospital in Gaza, raising concerns about the militarization of healthcare facilities in the region. The Israeli military conducted an operation against the Kamal Adwan hospital last year, suspecting it to house a Hamas command center. 240 individuals, including Abu Safiya, were arrested on suspicion of terrorist activities and are still detained in a controversial prison. The hospital doors have been sealed by soldiers, severely limiting access to medical care for the population in northern Gaza. The area has been the site of a major military operation for almost three months, with critics accusing Israel of creating unbearable conditions to force civilians to leave.

The United Nations has raised concerns that hospitals are being turned into battlefields. Israel claims it has no choice but to target these buildings as Hamas operates from within. Testimonies from detained militants suggest that Hamas has been seeking refuge in hospitals due to the destruction of its infrastructure. Hospitals provide a sense of security for Hamas, as they are perceived as safe from direct attacks. The previous hospital director, Ahmed Kahlot, revealed that Hamas members, including doctors and nurses, had ties to the hospital. He also mentioned that Hamas commanders used the hospital facilities as offices.

Israel has not presented evidence connecting Abu Safiya to Hamas. Previous allegations against hospitals have not always been substantiated. Despite discovering weapons and tunnels, claims of Hamas headquarters within hospitals have not always been validated. Hamas militants have been accused of posing as patients to access medical facilities. The intense conflict has resulted in numerous casualties, with attacks on medical facilities causing extensive harm to civilians.

International organizations have emphasized the protection of hospitals under international law, but if these facilities are used for military purposes, they become legitimate targets. Israel is urged to minimize harm to patients and civilians in its operations. The World Health Organization reports a significant number of casualties and injuries among civilians in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for medical assistance in the region. Attacks on medical facilities have had devastating consequences, leading to a high number of fatalities and injuries.
