khao lak, thailand - A Thai man, Watana Sittirachot, shares his harrowing experience during the tsunami that struck the coast of Thailand 20 years ago, leaving a trail of destruction and loss of lives.

Watana Sittirachot, now 32, remembers the day the tsunami hit his village in Thailand, as he was stranded in an internet cafe with friends. The panic and chaos ensued as people screamed about the flooding, leaving many confused about the situation. Watana found refuge in a school, narrowly escaping the wrath of the tsunami. However, his family members were not as lucky, with his uncle's body found months later, miles away from their village.

Having survived the disaster, Watana now runs an orphanage, 'Baan Than Namchai', providing a home for children who lost their parents in the catastrophe. Together with volunteers, Watana is diligently working to maintain a cemetery where 394 unclaimed bodies lie, a grim reminder of the tragic event.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the tsunami, Watana explains how his village, once a bustling fishing community, transformed into a tourist hotspot with new hotels and increased job opportunities. The rebuilding efforts were a collaborative initiative between the Thai government, local communities, and international organizations.

Jeroen Deknatel, a long-time resident of Thailand, played a crucial role in providing aid post-tsunami. Coordinating relief efforts with international donations, Deknatel assisted in repairing fishermen's boats and restoring shelters for the displaced.

Despite the traumatic memories, Watana stresses the importance of honoring the victims annually, alongside children from the orphanage and Buddhist monks. He acknowledges the resilience of the Thai people in the face of adversity, emphasizing the community's determination to move forward and rebuild.
