brussels - European leaders, including Premier Dick Schoof and Giorgia Meloni, met to discuss creating a stable regime in Syria and innovative solutions for migrant returns.

European leaders recently gathered to discuss solutions for the ongoing migration crisis, with a particular focus on return policies. Premier Dick Schoof emphasized the importance of creating a stable regime in Syria that respects minorities as a key factor in facilitating the return of Syrian refugees and preventing further displacement. The leaders also discussed providing humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees in Turkey and reopening the EU diplomatic mission in Damascus.

The meeting, organized by Italian leader Giorgia Meloni, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Premier Dick Schoof, highlighted the need for collective action among EU countries to assess the safety of conditions in Syria for potential returns. Talks also revolved around innovative strategies, such as establishing return hubs outside the EU.

Looking ahead, Brussels is set to introduce a new proposal for a European return system in the first half of 2025. Premier Dick Schoof underscored the significance of the issue, noting that a large percentage of undocumented asylum seekers and illegal immigrants currently residing in Europe do not return to their home countries.
