hamburg, germany - German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd experiences increased container bookings on China-US routes following the trade agreement between the two countries, leading to over 50% surge in bookings.

Hapag-Lloyd Observes Surge in Demand

Hapag-Lloyd, a major German shipping company, reports a significant rise in container bookings on routes connecting China and the US after the recent trade deal.

Impact of the Trade Agreement

The deal between the US and China, announcing a 90-day agreement to lower import tariffs, has resulted in a more than 50% increase in bookings on these routes, marking a substantial shift in demand.

Previously, bookings had sharply declined due to the trade war between the two countries, while bookings on other global routes remained relatively stable.

Industry Responses

Competitors like A. P. Møller-Maersk and CMA CGM have also noticed a rise in container bookings following the trade agreement, considering it a positive step towards easing trade tensions.

Concerns over Red Sea Route

Despite assurances from Houthi rebels about halting ship attacks, Hapag-Lloyd has not resumed voyages through the Red Sea, emphasizing the need for concrete guarantees before doing so. Other shipping companies have rerouted their vessels via southern Africa, lengthening travel times.

As the industry adapts to changing dynamics post the US-China trade deal, Hapag-Lloyd remains vigilant in its operational decisions.
