stockholm - American John Hopfield and British Canadian Geoffrey Hinton have been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physics for their research on neural networks and learning machines.

American John Hopfield and British Canadian Geoffrey Hinton have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking research in the field of artificial intelligence. The Nobel Committee in Stockholm announced the award on Tuesday.

The committee highlighted Hopfield's achievement in building a memory that can store and reconstruct images and other patterns in data, while acknowledging Hinton for his method of autonomously identifying properties in data, such as specific elements in images.

Hinton, addressing the press after the announcement, drew parallels between the rise of AI and the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. He expressed his belief that AI has the potential to assist humanity in various fields, including healthcare and the workplace. However, he also voiced concerns about the possibility of losing control over AI, emphasizing the need for caution in its development.

The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to American scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA, tiny molecules that play a significant genetic role in various organisms, including humans. Their research, initially conducted independently in 1993, was described by the committee as groundbreaking.

The laureates will receive a medal, a diploma, and a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor, shared between them. This sum is derived from the legacy of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and the founder of the prestigious awards.

Notably, scientists from the Netherlands have been recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics in several years, including 1902, 1910, 1913, 1953, 1981, 1984, 1999, and 2010.
