vannes, france - Former French surgeon confesses to raping and sexually abusing 299 patients, mostly children, in a significant abuse scandal.

Former Surgeon Admits Guilt in Massive Abuse Scandal

A former French surgeon, Joël Le Scouarnec, is accused of abusing 299 mainly young and unconscious patients in hospitals between 1989 and 2014. This trial is considered one of the largest pedophilia cases in the country. Majority of victims were under 15, with an average age of 11. The youngest victim was 1, the oldest 70, most under anesthesia.

Le Scouarnec (74) faces charges of severe rape and assault, as well as exploitation of his position as a doctor. In 2020, he was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for raping and assaulting four children, including two nieces.

Investigators identified victims by examining his diaries found during a 2017 search, initiated after a neighbor accused him of rape. Notes contained names, ages, addresses of victims, and details of violence, often disguised as medical procedures.

The trial is expected to continue until June, with the defendant facing a potential twenty-year sentence.
