Extent of Damage and Evacuations

The burning forest area in Ofunato city has reached approximately 8% of the city's area, equivalent to 2,600 hectares. Evacuation warnings have been issued to 4,596 residents in 1,896 households, with a significant number seeking shelter in evacuation centers and hotels.

Firefighting Efforts

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) is coordinating firefighting operations with 2,043 firefighters from 14 prefectures and the support of Japan's Self-Defense Forces (SDF) through aerial and ground interventions.

Weather Conditions and Casualties

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) forecasts continued dry weather in the region, with the possibility of rain or snowfall expected tonight. The fire has claimed one life so far, with at least 84 structures damaged by the flames.
