amsterdam - Secret talks with political rivals signal changing stance towards Zelensky, raising concerns over peace prospects.

White House Engages with Ukrainian President's Political Rivals

According to reports from Politico, the White House has been in contact with political rivals of President Zelensky, namely former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and ex-President Petro Poroshenko. The aim is to explore the possibility of holding early elections, despite constitutional limitations due to the ongoing state of emergency.

While Tymoshenko and Poroshenko publicly oppose elections during wartime, behind the scenes, they appear more cooperative towards Washington. This move indicates a shift in the White House's strategy, as they believe Zelensky's popularity is waning due to ongoing conflicts and corruption issues.

Compared to the seasoned politicians, Zelensky, a political newcomer, won the 2019 elections by a landslide, promising peace and anti-corruption measures. Recent polls suggest strong support for Zelensky among Ukrainians, highlighting a preference for his leadership over the established figures.

The White House's apparent backing of Zelensky's opponents reflects a growing concern over his ability to navigate the complexities of Ukrainian politics. The pressure to hold elections sooner rather than later raises questions about the true intentions behind these political maneuvers.

Zelensky's willingness to step down for the sake of peace or a NATO membership underscores the challenges he faces in balancing domestic expectations with international pressures.
