barcelona - Spanish authorities arrest seven individuals following a deadly voyage resulting in eight fatalities on the Canary Islands.

Spanish Police Crack Down on Human Traffickers

Spanish authorities have identified five of the eight deceased victims, including a 14-month-old baby from Gambia, in a tragic incident involving a wooden fishing boat, known as a cayuco. The boat arrived at La Restinga port on El Hierro with 224 passengers on December 28, 2024, after a week-long journey from Bassar, Senegal. Upon arrival, several migrants required immediate medical attention due to severe injuries sustained, likely from onboard altercations.

The Guardia Civil launched an investigation, revealing that eight individuals had died en route, presumably at the hands of human traffickers. Seven suspects were arrested across Spain, with coordinated efforts by the Human Trafficking and Immigration Prosecutor's Office in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The suspects have been remanded in custody following their court appearances.

Instances of human trafficking have been on the rise, with the Policia Nacional apprehending 110 'captains' in 2024 for aiding illegal immigration and involvement in criminal activities, facilitating the arrival of 1,865 migrants on the Canary Islands. Nearly 40,000 migrants reached Las Canarias, with many traffickers organizing transportation and accommodation for migrants.

Tragically, thousands of migrants perished attempting the perilous journey to the Canary Islands, with individuals paying between 1000 and 3000 euros for a spot on a boat. The treacherous conditions at sea have led to numerous deaths, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced measures to combat human trafficking.
