dublin, ireland - Dutch national confesses to smuggling 2.2 tons of cocaine on hijacked ship, leading Irish police to major seizure.

Dutchman's Involvement in Record Drug Seizure

A Dutchman, Kumali O. (49), played a key role in a shipment of 2.2 tons of cocaine on a hijacked ship, as reported by Irish police.

The vessel, originating from Curaçao, was intercepted off the coast of Cork, carrying over 150 million euros worth of narcotics, following an unexpected inspection by the navy.

The 'mv Matthew' was found to have the largest cocaine haul ever seized by Irish authorities, setting a record. The ship's erratic behavior, including reporting engine issues and changing course, raised suspicions.

After the captain fell ill amid onboard tensions, the coast guard evacuated him, leading to the interception by an Irish naval vessel. The crew was apprehended with the assistance of a special forces unit.

In addition to the Dutchman, two Ukrainians and an Iranian also admitted their involvement in the drug conspiracy, pleading guilty before the Irish Special Criminal Court.

The defendants, including Kumali O., confessed to being aboard the 'mv Matthew' with over 2.2 tons of cocaine in late September 2023, aiming to sell the drugs elsewhere.

The massive cocaine seizure, valued at over €157 million, was linked to a Colombian cartel and destined for the European market.

The ongoing investigation and legal proceedings are expected to continue in the coming months, following the initial court appearances and pleas.
