Paris has decided to name a section of Avenue de Pologne after the late Russian activist and politician Alexei Navalny, who died in captivity under unclear circumstances a year ago. Navalny, known for his anti-corruption activism and criticism of President Putin's politics, was sentenced to nineteen years in prison for leading an extremist organization. The renaming of the street is a rare exception for someone who has not been deceased for five years yet. The move is significant as the street is located in a posh neighborhood with a considerable Russian immigrant population and houses the Russian embassy.

Despite allegations from Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya, and others, the Kremlin continues to deny any involvement in Navalny's death. Navalnaya accused President Putin of being behind her husband's demise. She expressed her skepticism about negotiating peace with Putin, especially regarding the conflict in Ukraine, during the Munich Security Conference.
