england - The 2025-26 Premier League season introduces new rules targeting holding, goalkeeper time-wasting, and referee transparency with RefCam technology.

Premier League Law Changes 2025: What to Expect

The 2025-26 Premier League season brings significant law tweaks including a crackdown on holding, goalkeeper time-wasting, and the introduction of RefCam for referee perspectives. Referees will focus on reducing holding during set pieces, with new guidelines emphasizing the impact on opponents' movements. Additionally, keepers now have eight seconds to release the ball, with clear penalties for delays. RefCam, a camera fixed to referees' headsets, offers viewers a unique perspective of the game but won't show live footage. These changes aim to enhance fairness and transparency in the league.

Crackdown on Holding and Simulation

Referees will target players holding opponents during set pieces, aiming to minimize unfair advantages. The focus will be on sustained holding that impedes an opponent's ability to play or challenge for the ball. Refs are encouraged to penalize offenses without repeated warnings, streamlining gameplay. The initiative also includes a focus on reducing simulation through increased cautions.

Keeper Time-Wasting Rule

Goalkeepers now have eight seconds to release the ball once in a position to do so unhindered. Referees will indicate the countdown, and failure to release will result in a corner kick. The rule aims to prevent time-wasting tactics that can impact match outcomes. The change follows successful trials in lower leagues and international competitions.

RefCam for Transparency

RefCam technology will provide viewers with a unique perspective from the referee's viewpoint. While not for live broadcast, RefCam footage offers insights into key moments from the ref's angle. The Premier League aims to enhance transparency and understanding with this initiative, following positive feedback from previous trials.
