oostende, belgium - High temperatures lead to traffic congestion at the Belgian coast, with three individuals falling ill in a stationary train amidst the May Day celebrations.

Traffic Chaos at Belgian Coast Due to Summer Temperatures

The Belgian beaches saw a surge in visitors on May Day due to the sunny weather, attracting approximately 180,000 day-trippers and 125,000 overnight tourists. This influx caused significant traffic jams on the roads leading to the coast, leading to a dangerous situation in a train.

Stranded Train Incident

On Thursday around 11:30 a.m., a crowded train heading towards the coast came to a halt near Affligem, Belgium. Smoke was reported in the train briefly, but the situation was swiftly controlled. The passengers have been evacuated, with three individuals falling ill and taken to the hospital.

The train was carrying several hundred passengers, with infrastructure manager Infrabel even mentioning around a thousand travelers. Due to the train standing still in the warm weather, the decision was made to evacuate the passengers. They were guided off the train onto the tracks and gathered under a bridge for shade and provided with water, as stated by Dimitri Temmerman from NMBS to Het Nieuwsblad.
