Former Surinamese President Jules Albert Wijdenbosch Passes Away

Jules Albert Wijdenbosch, the former president of Suriname, has passed away in Paramaribo at the age of 83. Wijdenbosch took office in 1996 as the president for the National Democratic Party (NDP) led by Desi Bouterse.

Political Career and Achievements

During his presidency, Wijdenbosch dismissed his 'state advisor' Bouterse, left the NDP, and established his own party, the Democratic National Platform 2000, attracting several prominent NDP members.

Wijdenbosch oversaw the construction of bridges over the Suriname and Coppenamerivier rivers. The bridge connecting Paramaribo to Commewijne was named the Jules Albert Wijdenbosch Bridge, commonly known as the Bosjebrug.

Varied Political Roles

Throughout his career, Wijdenbosch served as vice premier, premier, minister, and parliamentarian. Following the Christmas coup of 1990, he held the position of vice president until 1991. After reconciling with Bouterse, he rejoined the NDP. When Bouterse became president, he appointed Wijdenbosch as a council advisor.

Academic and Political Contributions

Wijdenbosch studied public administration and political science in Amsterdam. He authored several publications on Suriname's governance and was recognized as an expert in the Surinamese electoral system. He would have turned 84 on May 2.
